Basic Instincts And Baby Breaks the Budget

WHEN I got pregnant, my goal was to spend as little as possible on maternity wear, baby goods and all the assorted, adorable items that can put a big hole in your budget.

No $700 Bugaboo for us. We found a sturdy stroller, circa 1998, at a tag sale for $65. Our bassinet was a freebie from a neighbor of my Aunt Ginny. Friends and family members were unbelievably generous with gifts and hand-me-downs of everything from clothes to toys to several months' worth of brand-new diapers.

All together in those first few months, I estimate that we saved a couple of thousand dollars on typical new-parent outlays.

The trouble is, I'd hoped to ride this wave of frugal parenting for the next couple of years — or until our son can say, "Diesel jeans" — but when the Sony camcorder arrived, all bets were off.

Dead tot's mom blasts van driver FURY IN THE COURT

UNION CITY - The Lodi man accused of fatally running down a 14-month-old North Bergen girl was convicted of driving without insurance yesterday - and fined a measly $300.

The child's heartbroken mother knows that's all the justice she will see, but couldn't hold in her emotions after the verdict.

"You may have escaped justice here on earth, but you will not escape divine justice," said Katherine Mosquera's mother, Marguerite Mosquera, to Alejandro Rodriguez after the municipal court hearing.

Police officers quickly stood between the two and Rodriguez rushed from the courtroom as the tearful mother yelled "You will always carry this in your heart and in your conscience," in Spanish.

And apparently Rodriguez wasn't happy either with the for his role in the death of the small child.

Outdated Baby Food, Formula Found On Store Shelves

SEATTLE -- Outdated baby formula on local grocery store shelves -- it's not supposed to be there, but our KIRO 7 Consumer investigators found it.

Baby food and baby formula are the only foods required by the FDA to have a "use by" date printed on the cans and jars.

When that date comes and goes, that food and formula is supposed to be pulled.

But we found outdated food and formula still on the shelves -- and still for sale.

We took our hidden camera inside local grocery stores.

We found that of the 29 grocery stores, drug stores and other retailers, nine had baby formula on the shelves that was past the "use-by" date.

We found a can of powdered formula with a use-by date read August 2006. But it was still for sale in early January when we bought it.

Smith's companion, child in Bahamas home

Anna Nicole Smith's 5-month-old daughter and the baby's purported father have reclaimed the Bahamas mansion where they lived before the former Playboy Playmate died last week, her lawyer said.

Not only is the paternity of Smith's baby - who stands to inherit a fortune from Smith's late husband - in dispute, but so is the Bahamas mansion where Smith had been living.

Smith, who died in Florida on Thursday, had claimed that a U.S.

developer and former boyfriend, G. Ben Thompson, gave her the house. But Thompson said he had only loaned it to Smith - and during the weekend had the locks changed.

Smith's lawyer and companion, Howard K. Stern - one of three men who claims to be .

CEOs rally business women

A national gathering of women executives heard a clear message Thursday in Laguna Niguel: Don't let anything stand in the way between you and your passion.

A panel of female CEOs urged women to be willing to fight through obstacles, which are bound to emerge. They spoke at the "Executive Women Leading the Way" conference produced by the Executive Women's Network at the Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel in Dana Point.

Lisa Druxman identified her passion as having a career that was supportive of motherhood. She founded Stroller Strides (strollerstrides.com) and now is CEO of a franchised fitness company with more than 300 locations in 30 states. The 5-year-old company is based in San Diego.

"Don't expect it to be an easy road," Druxman said. "If you're not passionate about what you're doing, you'll get lost along the way.
