Younger women denied IVF

Young women are being denied test tube baby treatment until their late thirties under NHS rationing plans, even though age sharply reduces their chances of conceiving a child.

The move means even couples diagnosed early with fertility problems are being told to wait years before they can have IVF. A 39-year-old's chances of conceiving through the treatment are only half those of a woman under 35.

While cash-strapped health authorities have long restricted treatment for older women on the grounds that over-forties have little practical chance of success they have not previously set lower age limits in the same way.

PennDOT to tweak Jim Thorpe crossing

State transportation officials said Friday they hope to fine-tune the changes made to a downtown Jim Thorpe intersection to improve pedestrian safety.

They also announced that the wheels have been set in motion to install a traffic signal at a Mahoning Township intersection along Route 443 where a woman was killed two months ago.

8 intersections will get mast arm traffic signals

During the past few weeks, downtown strollers likely have noticed mysterious, spray-painted markings on sidewalks east of Fourth Street.

They are engineering techno-codes that herald a forthcoming project to install mast arm traffic signals at eight intersections on First and Second Streets, from Central Avenue to Fourth Avenue S.

The $1.6-million job also will include installation of crosswalks, pedestrian signals and ramps to accommodate disabled people.

Traffic disruption should be modest, said Tom Gibson, city engineering director.

Single-lane traffic might be necessary during short periods, but no major reroutings are expected, Gibson said.

Mast arm signals are installed on a metal assembly with a rod that sticks out over the street.

Weight loss program turns into marathon

Gwen Dardant Guillotte of New Iberia is taking her health seriously and doing so with a good cause in mind.Guillotte has joined Teams in Training, an endurance program for runners, walkers, cyclist and triathletes hoping to participate in the Country Music Half-Marathon in Nashville, Tenn. The half-marathon will be held on April 28 to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society."It all started because I wanted to loose baby weight, but I got into it more once I realized it's for a good cause," she said. Since Jan. 24, Guillotte said that she has been running through the City Park and down Main Street in preparation for the race. The training program provides a training schedule, coaches to guide them, and group runs every two weeks with other area participants. The organization also hosts events for runners such as shoe clinics where runners can find the best running shoe for their running needs."The coaches say how far to run and for how long," said Guillotte.
