Park Slope Strollers Against The World
The hullabaloo surrounding the Park Slope Barnes & Noble's request for parents to park strollers upstairs in a designated area is exactly the kind of tempest in a neighborhood that brings out the haves (having children) and have nots (having no children). But what's fascinating is the dialog created on both the part of the parents who want to wield their strollers and those who want to be free of strollers while writing their Great American novel at the B&N. Here are some of our favorite comments on Brooklyn Record's post:Rule of thumb: If your kid is too heavy to carry on your back (which you should be doing, instead of wheeling it around in a mini-SUV), then it's time the brat started to use his lil' legs. If he doesn't WANT to use his lil' legs to go shopping/socializing etc . . . with you, maybe you should postpone those activities until he can share in them with you.
Many spend years seeking aid for disabled
Ten-year-old Harym Guerrero is bright, inquisitive and loves to talk. She also needs help to bathe, dress, write and eat, and someone always has to shadow her. Harym suffers from cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder that affects muscle control and coordination. A pump in her stomach sends medicine through her body that keeps her muscles from spasming out of control. When the pump gives out every few years, she has to have surgery to replace it. She needs expensive wheelchairs, wheelchair lifts and a stroller to get around. Her school provides an aide to help her during the day, but her mother and grandmother share duties at night and on the weekend. The Guerrero family qualifies for some Medicaid benefits, but they, like thousands of other Rio Grande Valley residents, are languishing on an endless waiting list for state disabled services that help pay for many of the services that Harym and her family need.
Smith's companion reclaims Bahamas mansion
Anna Nicole Smith's 5-month-old daughter and the baby's purported father have reclaimed the Bahamas mansion where they lived before the former Playboy Playmate died last week, her lawyer said. Not only is the paternity of Smith's baby -- who stands to inherit a fortune from Smith's late husband -- in dispute, but so is the Bahamas mansion where Smith had been living. Smith, who died in Florida on Thursday, had claimed that a U.S. developer and former boyfriend, G. Ben Thompson, gave her the house. But Thompson said he had only loaned it to Smith -- and during the weekend had the locks changed. .
NAACP leads rally to push a new agenda
RALEIGH — An eclectic mix of more than 2,000 civil rights activists, anti-war protesters and low-income workers rallied behind one banner Saturday to demand North Carolina legislators pass a "people's agenda" this year. "The forces against us don't know how powerful we are when we work together," the Rev. William Barber, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, told the crowd that filled downtown Raleigh's Memorial Auditorium. The group then marched one mile to the Legislative Building, where hundreds signed an 11-foot wooden "scroll" to endorse a 14-point action plan. The plan endorsed diverse concerns from expanding health care coverage to abolishing the death penalty and withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq. About 25 people from Pitt County representing the NAACP, Coalition Against Racism, Democracy North Carolina and other groups traveled together to the march, said Calvin Henderson, president of the local NAACP chapter.
