AUTO REVIEW: 2007 BMW 335i Coupe

DARNESTOWN, MD (Marketwatch) -- BMW is on a roll. Bayerische Motoren Werke posted record revenues of $63.7 billion last year, helped in no small part by strong demand for its three series sedans.

The automaker called 2006 the best financial year in company history. And January sales of the BMW brand were up 2.5%, indicating that the good times may well continue.

That brings us to more good news -- our tested 2007 335i coupe. BMW calls all of its cars "The Ultimate Driving Machine" and this coupe should have that title in all caps. But the 335i is not for all. It is aimed right at the brains and hearts of those who really enjoy driving a high performance car and all that entails.

In this case, that would include a stiffer than normal ride, extremely positive steering with the best feedback we've ever encountered in a four seater, impeccable handling, and power that could only be categorized as "Oh, Baby!!!!!"

If you are just coming off a long experience in a big sport utility, or pure luxury car, this very sporting machine might turn you off.

A.M. Stir

In case you missed it last week on the Today show, Fit Pregnancy magazine recently ranked Jacksonville 16th among 50 large cities as the best place to have a baby.

The magazine based its criteria on 50 categories, from access to obstetricians, to affordability, to the number of birthing centers and birthing options, to available day care and more.

Jacksonville was also honored in two special mention categories:

Most Stroller Friendly City: Why? The reasons cited were warm year-round weather and nearly seven times as much park space as the average for cities in the survey. The magazine said Jacksonville boasts 106 miles of stroller-friendly paths, which is 51 percent more than average.

Best City for Child-care: State laws mandate stringent background checks for child-care workers, and Jacksonville's rush hour traffic is moderate (rush hour is a top concern for parents juggling day-care drop-offs and pickups with driving to and from work).

Observer: Hudson losing more than a cafe

I'm not sure where I'll go once Harvest Cafe closes. What some - specifically, the new building's owner - don't understand is that it's not the coffee, although the coffee and food are excellent, and it's not the building, it's the loss of something much bigger.

It's the feeling you get walking through the door of Karen and Pippa's place. There was a bagel shop there before Karen and Pippa owned it - the bagels were excellent but it wasn't like being Norm walking into Cheers where everyone knew your name the way Karen and Pippa have transformed it.

What strikes me the most with Harvest Cafe is the comforting feeling you get walking through the door. There's nothing like having two women wait on you, local art on the walls, always having someone know who you are - it's like being a kid again in Mom's kitchen with 'art' on the refrigerator and chicken soup on the stove.

King debut boosts Spartans

SPARTANS, the holders of the Image Printers East of Scotland Qualifying Cup, advanced to the quarter-final stage with a 2-1 win against Lothian Thistle. Alex King made his debut for Spartans and scored after only 15 minutes. Craig Fraser equalised for Lothian with a 20-yard free-kick before Kevin Motion sealed Spartans' place in the last eight.

Preston Athletic, last season's beaten finalists, were ousted on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw with Easthouses Lily. Stevie Laidlaw gave Preston a late lead, but Darren McGlashan equalised two minutes from time. There were no goals in extra time and Easthouses were victorious 5-3 on penalty kicks, with David Beattie netting the winner.
