Latest must-have for baby - a pram with aircon?
TEL AVIV: Most parents worried about their baby getting too hot in a pram will adjust blankets or head for shade, but one dad wanted a more high tech solution for his young daughter a portable air conditioner. "At first I was trying to cool her off with a hand-held fan. Then I thought of a much simpler idea a little air conditioner," Israeli Ofir Ben Aharon said. The device, which weighs less than 2 kg looks like a motorised fan attached to the end of about a half-metre long pipe that can be fitted under a typical pram. An air vent connected to the other side of the pipe is fitted with a puppet so it can be propped inside, looking like just another of baby's stuffed toys. Ben Aharon says he wants to market the battery-operated machine in Europe and the United States in the next few months, although he has not yet come up with a retail price.
A new French exception? Having more babies
PARIS: Thirty years ago, the government of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing was urging the French to have "un troisième enfant pour la France!" But it is only now that they have taken the advice. The national statistics agency says that in 2006 France had the highest birthrate in Europe. The average number of births by women of fertile age was slightly more than two. Thus France becomes one of the two European Union states with a positive birthrate; Ireland is the other. The contrast with their neighbors is very marked. Germany, Italy and Spain all have birthrates under 1.4. The rates in the new EU members, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and even Roman Catholic Poland, are below 1.3. French life expectancy in 2005 was also the highest in Europe, at 84 for women and 77 for men, and it increased last year by three and a half months for women and nearly five months for men.
Budget crisis puts some low-income aid at risk
TRAVERSE CITY Jenny Kenter worries where she'll get baby formula, baby food, and nine gallons of milk a month to feed her three kids this summer if Grand Traverse County decides to cut programs for women and children. The Women, Infants and Children nutrition program is one of several programs tailored to low income families that faces drastic cuts and possible elimination in order to resolve the county health department's pending budget crisis. "There are a lot of families out there that really, really need it with the way the economy is going, Kenter said. "Some of that baby food is really expensive and you can't always afford it. The health department started the year projecting a $356,000 deficit. That's jumped to $582,000, due to reduced revenue for permits, increased costs from state mandated program changes, and reduced reimbursements from the state run Medicaid program.
