Proud dad running for baby's saviours

A father is entering the London Marathon to show his thanks for the staff that helped save the life of his newborn daughter.Paul Sim was worried for his wife Karen after she went into labour three months early and was treated at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee where she gave birth to Eilidh, who only weighed 3lb.However, staff managed to pull her through and Mr Sim has helped Eilidh celebrate her first birthday thanks to the care from hospital staff and Bliss, a charity that cares for premature babies."We were given wonderful care, so Karen and I just wanted to say thank you," Mr Sim told the Daily Record. "The staff at Ninewells Hospital were fantastic and the support we got from Bliss was brilliant."It gets you through."Mrs Sim's waters broke just 30 weeks into pregnancy and doctors battled for four weeks to keep her labour at bay. With the run due to take place in April, Mr Sim added: "Bliss provides a lot of support for parents and is constantly raising money.

Take care when using a shopping cart

Many stores now offer kid-friendly shopping carts, such as those shaped like cars or trucks with steering wheels. But accidents can - and do - occur. More than 24,000 children were sent to U.S. hospital emergency rooms for accidents involving shopping carts in 2005, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. The injuries often resulted when children fell from the cart, became entrapped in the cart or fell while riding on the outside.

Safety measures

» When possible, use a stroller, a wagon or a soft, Baby Bjorn-type carrier rather than a shopping cart to transport small children around a store.

» Consider asking another adult to accompany you to the store for the purpose of watching your children as you shop.

» Use seatbelts to restrain your child in the cart seat.

MPR Open House Quote of the Day

Okay, first let me say that I LOVE our listeners! I can't believe how many people shuffled through the snow flurries in Saint Paul to come by MPR's new headquarters for our 40th Anniversary open house. Tons and tons and tons - from longtime members to infants in strollers and everyone in between. Even though I've been up since 3:30 this morning, I'm totally amped and filled with a wonderful mix of joy and pride. I'm so proud of what we do at MPR every day, but if I had a vest the buttons would have burst right off because of our MEMBERS. We have the most loyal, active, engaged listeners in the country. And surely the most good-looking, strong and above-average.

So. Jeff Esworthy said he got a great quote from a guest today and wants to make t-shirts.

"Minnesota Public Radio Rules the World"

Though I don't think we're actually headed toward total world domination, I think I can safely say that MPR and its listeners rule!

THANK YOU.
