New York Magazine to Shake Off Midtown Coil for Hudson Square

The Observer's crackerjack media reporter (and former Manhattan Transfers columnist) Michael Calderone this week reported on New York magazine's likely move from Midtown to (gasp!) Hudson Square.

"Our lease is up in September," said a New York spokesperson. "So we are exploring a number of different options for a space, including negotiating with our current landlords."

First on the list: 1 Hudson Square, in far west Soho, just up from the Holland Tunnel. (Note to staff: Is Jersey ... back? Wait--was it here the first time? Check archives!)

The Rosetta stone for deciphering Park Slope stroller mommies and Upper East Side Type-A's would join other media joints that have made a commercial home in the once-struggling Soho slice, including WNYC and CBS Radio; Viacom, too, plans a move to Hudson Square.

Dixie Chicks dominate Grammys as The Police reunite

Los Angeles (dpa) - Country band The Dixie Chicks, who riled many fans with their early criticism of the war in Iraq, were lauded by their fellow musicians Sunday as they won five Grammy Awards, including the coveted song and record of the year prize for their defiant ballad Not Ready To Make Nice. The female band dominated a night when the US music industry threw off its worries about plunging record sales to gather for its most prestigious awards show - the musical equivalent of the Oscars. .

Mom's milk fuels fight

SANTA ANA, Calif. - A woman who was forced to throw away her breast milk at an airport this month is fighting to change the way nursing mothers are treated in the changing world of high-security travel.

Airport security agents in Las Vegas earlier this month banned Rachel Popplewell of Capistrano Beach, Calif., from bringing her breast milk on a flight to California because she didn't have her baby with her.

Popplewell, who says she followed all the rules for bringing liquids on a plane, sent a written complaint to the Transportation Security Administration, which oversees airport screening.

"You should be allowed to carry it, and you should be treated like a human being who is feeding your child," Popplewell said.

A spokesman for the federal agency said he had not seen a record of the incident.

Carwash Victim’s Family Awarded $7.5 Million

The family of a woman who died after being hit by an SUV at a carwash was awarded $7.5 million in compensatory damages Friday in the lawsuit against the business.

Brenda Lee Brown, 43, died of head injuries after the crash in 2005 at Town 'N County Car Wash. Her 18-month-old son, who she was pushing in a stroller at the time, survived.

Her husband, Mac Brown, was awarded $2.5 million and her son got $5 million. The award was added to the $92,000 the car wash already agreed to pay for documented financial damages, The Tampa Tribune reported. Mac Brown declined to seek any punitive damages. In its verdict, the jury said punitive damages were warranted in the case.

"The jury has spoken and justice has been done," said Steve Yerrid, Brown's attorney.

• A final journey home 'Over the Rainbow'

Hearing the soothing and dreamlike acoustic version of "Over the Rainbow" recorded by a gentle Hawaiian man allowed smiles to wrestle their way onto the pinched and tear-streaked faces of the Scout masters, shipmates, baby sitters, neighbors, countless friends and family of Navy Hospital Corpsman Matthew Conte.

The 22-year-old, known as "Doc Conte" to the Marines he served alongside, died Feb. 1 from a roadside bomb detonated in Iraq's Al Anbar province.

"I kind of expected this, unfortunately," his father told the mourners at Grace Church. He said his son's willingness to jump to the aid of anyone in need "scared the living daylights out of us."

The Conte family had lived in Portage County but recently moved to Florida.

His father and others in the crowd stood, passed around wireless microphones and told their cherished stories of the baby-faced 2003 Field High School graduate.
