Police hopeful tip pans out in abandoned baby case

SASKATOON - A home-care worker driving through a Saskatoon neighbourhood Saturday may have provided police with key information about how and why a newborn baby girl was abandoned on a doorstep in frigid temperatures Saturday.

The woman saw a man clutching what she thought could be a baby to his chest near a bus stop, Saskatoon police Staff Sgt. Kirby Harmon said Monday.

"She had been bothered by what she'd seen," Harmon said. "(She) didn't know where Wathaman (Crescent) was, and when she realized where it was, she realized she may have some valuable information."

Tragic reminder of the power of nature

Down by the river near where I live, someone has placed a solitary bunch of flowers on the towpath. It is a mournful, lonely reminder that right here, last weekend, a 15-year-old boy drowned.

It seems from what can be pieced together about the poor lad's last moments that he was cycling along the path, hit one of the many potholes opened up by the winter flood, his bike buckled under him and he was flung into the freezing water. He disappeared immediately, consumed by the torrent.

A week on, his body has not been recovered. At his school, the tragedy hit especially hard: the day after the boy disappeared, an inquest opened into the death of another pupil who had drowned only six months previously.

Jason to give up baby?

It seems it's all getting a bit too much for Coronation Street's new single parent Jason Grimshaw - what with looking after baby Holly and running the builder's yard.

The novelty of pushing her around in a pram with girlfriend Sarah has worn off and he is keen to regain his lost independence, reports TV Times.

"Jason hasn't bothered with Holly at all," says Ryan Thomas, who plays the young dad. "And he realises he's not ready for the responsibility. He finds her a lot of hard work without too much reward and he's had enough.

The final straw for him is when he dozes off one day and wakes up to find the child gone. "He thinks somebody has stolen her, so he calls the police," Ryan explains.

"But then she turns up with Eileen who'd taken her for a walk. The incident made him realise he really can't cope."

He then makes an anonymous call to social services about a baby that is not being cared for properly.
