| Sunnyvale man hailed as hero after saving baby
As smoke filled her second-floor bedroom, Marta Ibarra held her 8-month-old baby out the window. She needed a hero. Below, in the pre-dawn darkness, a man suddenly appeared, standing on a white van. He begged her to drop the baby. She let Stephanie go, right into a stranger's arms. Then, Ibarra jumped onto Desiderio Solice's Chevy van. It was Solice's quick thinking that saved Ibarra, her baby and a man next door who also jumped on the van, fire officials said. ``This man saved my family,'' said Stephanie's father and Ibarra's boyfriend, Rogelio Ordonez, who was not home at the time. ``I feel like these kinds of people can save the whole world.'' Sunnyvale public safety press officer John Pilger used one word to describe Solice: ``hero.'' The fire began about 4 a.m.
Autopsy: Baby died after mother's drug use
Autopsy results released Thursday on a stillborn child show the infant died after her mother took cocaine, authorities said. Jamie Lee Burroughs, 33, of Bayfield Loop, Murrells Inlet, was charged with homicide by child abuse in November. Authorities said there were indications that her drug use caused the death of her baby. The infant was born dead Sept. 15 at Waccamaw Community Hospital. Burroughs had cocaine in her system at the time of the baby's birth, police said. "The autopsy results showed that the baby did die from the maternal cocaine use," said Sgt. Neil Johnson, spokesman for the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office. Johnson said he does not have information on when the mother took cocaine or how much was used.
MP3: Lady Sovereign ft. Missy Elliott: "Love Me or Hate Me (Remix)"
My two favorite female rappers in the world right now on the same track! Thanks to the folks at Def Jam, we're proud to bring you the remix of Lady Sovereign's hit (yes, hit) single "Love Me or Hate Me", featuring none other than the supreme Missy Elliott. Missy touts the magnitude of her cars and jewelry ("wear more ice than the bears in the polar"), while Sov's new verse touts her, um, lack thereof. "Dirty morning breath" and burping are also involved. Shit, I think this is even better than the Missy track with M.I.A. .
Baby boomers set to fuel outbound tourism in Japan
The year 2007 will see the first large-scale retirement of members of the baby boom generation in Japan. And this is expected to be a major contributing factor in outbound tourism, which is expected to touch new heights in 2007. When it comes to baby-boomers, the demand is expected for journeys to express gratitude for a lifetime's work or to mark retirement. While baby boom retirees will not all start traveling in 2007, it is expected to mark a watershed in what will become a major future trend. This statement came from JTB Corp as it released the results of a survey of travel trends for 2007. “This is the year that the first members of the ‘baby boom' generation, born in the years 1947 to 1949, start to retire. Because this generation is a very large 6.8-million segment of the population, the trends in their consumption are of great concern to various sectors of industry.
More wives becoming main breadwinners
Aaron Frazier married his college sweetheart, Danielle, four years ago, knowing that she outearned him by $10,000 a year. Now that gap is even bigger. But even though Aaron's accountant salary today is half the $90,000 his wife makes monitoring clinical drug trials, it doesn't cause any friction. "I think both of us are pretty modern," said Danielle, 29, of Antioch, Tenn. "She does more cooking, and I do more housework," said Aaron, 30, adding that if they had a baby, he would start out being the primary child-care giver. Couples such as the Fraziers--with the wife bringing home most of the bacon--are becoming increasingly common and accepted among the nation's twenty- and thirtysomethings, the result of shifting education and job market patterns, and new attitudes toward work, family and gender differences.
