Abstract experience at Atkinson
The artwork featured at the Atkinson Gallery uses shape and color to convey emotions across the spectrum spanning its vast measure from sorrow to love. The exhibit entitled "The Brothers Pedersen," which opened Jan. 22 and will remain until Feb. 16, currently displays the artwork of the two brothers, Jens, 89, and Aage, 86. There was something about each piece that I loved, even though it meant that I stared at each for many minutes to interpret my own meaning. Glancing at the artwork, viewers will have to turn their heads sideways, then back, then sideways again, to make sense of it. "Their work is not just an illustration, but an experience," Atkinson Gallery director Dane Goodman said of the exhibit. The Pedersen brothers are from Holstead, Denmark, and for most of their lives, showed a passion for art.

They call it a sweet rivalry — two sisters' lives as interwoven as the yarn they have fashioned into intricate handiworks for nearly as long as they can remember. Frances Hughes, 73, and her younger sister Sue Childress, 68, say there is no craft they have not tried during their life. They've known how to crochet since they were girls, can't remember taking a lesson and have continued to learn new skills into their adult and now senior years. "We learned to crochet when we were 7 or 8 years old. We say we weren't taught, we just absorbed it," Hughes said. From knitting to crocheting, needlepointing, cross-stitching, quilting, painting and even plastering, they've done it all at least once, and each sister's handiwork is only outshone by the other.
