Birkheads Attorney Explains Baby Switch Concerns

LATEST: Photojournalist LARRY BIRKHEAD's attorney fears ANNA NICOLE SMITH's partner HOWARD K. STERN will switch babies in a desperate attempt to win the paternity battle over the model/actress' daughter. Lawyer DEBRA OPRI lost her bid to obtain DNA from the corpse of Smith yesterday (09FEB07) and was accused of being "disrespectful" by attorneys representing Stern and Smith. But Opri insists she had to try and make sure the baby who will be submitted for DNA testing on 20 February (07) - when the paternity battle will be decided - is Smith's daughter DANNIELYNN, and not Stern's lookalike niece. Opri explains, "We had a concern because Howard K. Stern has a niece who is very similar to Dannielynn. "We don't want the possibility that there's another baby being tested. We need (the DNA of) the mother, we need (the DNA of) the daughter and we need (the DNA of) Larry Birkhead."

Delays in Approving Baby Milk, Council Dismayed

The Consumer Council of Fiji has welcomed the Interim Agriculture Minister's decision to relax its ban on the importation of S26 Milk Formula in the country while still in the process of conducting import risk analysis on the S26 Milk and the Nestle Sunshine Junior Milk. However, the Chief Executive Officer, Premila Kumar has expressed disappointment that it has taken the Quarantine Department almost 14 months to take the trip to Malaysia and Ireland. The Council has also questioned the criteria the department has in place for permit approvals and is calling on the department to raise awareness on the criteria amongst the companies to prevent these types of occurrences in the future. Meanwhile, the Interim Agriculture Minister Jainend Kumar said the Ministry has temporarily relaxed its decision while still looking into the matter.

Organic clothing not just for hippies anymore

High fashion is going granola. But not the grunge of hippie yoga wear and grainy hemp T-shirts typically associated with organic clothes.

Think soft soy dresses, cropped organic terry jackets and slim fit organic denim jeans to pair with stilettos, not flip flops.

Consumers worried about ingesting harmful pesticides have long been purchasing organic foods. But the philosophy is slowly hitting mainstream clothing retailers as experts warn about the dangers pesticides pose to the environment.

Whether shoppers are buying eco-friendly because it's trendy or because they hope to preserve Mother Earth, they no longer have to sacrifice fashion for philosophy. With major retailers like Target, Victoria's Secret, H&M and Nike joining the green trend, there's something for fashionistas of every price range in 2007.

Father arrested in death of baby girl

APPLE VALLEY - When Maricia Tinsley gave birth to a baby girl at Riverside Community Hospital on Christmas Day, she had one word for the occasion: unique.

"She said, `That's a Christmas baby! That's unique,"' Tinsley's sister, Gloria Brown, recalled Wednesday.

In honor of the day, Tinsley named the girl Unique Maricia Brown.

But words were hard to come by to describe the way the infant left this world Saturday, allegedly at the hands of her 19-year-old father.

Kenneth Brown Jr. was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of beating his daughter to death at an apartment in the 15000 block of Sago Road. He was booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, where he was being held without bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned today in Victorville Superior Court.

Former Detroit cop details courage and harassment in book

DETROIT - "By the time I was 16, I had formulated four goals for myself. Those goals were to become a police officer, to have a baby by natural childbirth like my Cherokee ancestors, to kiss a woman and to sky dive. Accomplishing three out of four isn't too bad."

So begins "Badge 3483" by Charlene Genther, a former Detroit cop who insists she's not a writer; she's a storyteller.

And tell she does. "Badge 3483" details her years as a Detroit police officer, a 15-year career that began in 1975. Not only was Genther one of the first female officers, she was also a lesbian.

Did Genther face harassment on the job? You bet. She was mistreated, given the runaround and called every name in the book. But "Badge 3483" is more than a laundry list of complaints about being a lesbian in a male dominated field.
