Plaza Design stores in Arcata, McKinleyville and Eureka are in escrow and founder and owner Julie Fulkerson said she is looking forward to quieter days. New owners Jane and Peter Labes currently live in Orange County and intend to move to Humboldt County in June. In the meantime, the couple plan to get to know the staff and community and Fulkerson said she plans on helping them through the ownership transition. Jane is in Humboldt County to finish up on details of the sale and she and Fulkerson are planning to travel together to the New York International Gift Fair at the end of the month. After 25 years as owner, Fulkerson said she has mixed feelings about the sale, but she is definitely ready for a change of pace. "The first thing I'm going to do (when escrow closes) is take a nap," she said laughing, adding that she intends to clean up her office, take classes at Humboldt State University and find more time for playing the violin.

Charges are added in boy's dragging death
A 41-year-old woman charged last month in the dragging death of a toddler whose stroller was caught under her truck was indicted yesterday on the more serious charge of auto manslaughter, a Baltimore County prosecutor said. Lazara Arellano de Hogue was charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter and two felony counts of failing to stop her vehicle at the scene of a fatal accident. The county grand jury also indicted the woman on charges of failing to render aid, negligent and reckless driving, and failing to avoid a collision with a pedestrian. The most serious charges - vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run - carry prison terms of up to 10 years each, prosecutor Allan Webster said. Defense attorney Michael A. Zwaig, who represented the woman at a bail-review hearing in December, did not return a message yesterday.
Catwalk kids have a good time
More than two dozen future models and actors -- some barely old enough to talk -- struck a pose and strutted their stuff for the first time Saturday afternoon. "It's a great opportunity for young children to get exposure on a stage. It's also a great confidence booster," said Palmer Park Mall Marketing Director Colette Weir. Sunburst USA, a nationally recognized modeling agency, held a preliminary "Future Star" competition inside Palmer Park Mall, one of several regional competitions taking place throughout February. Categories included "Best Hair," "Best Dress" and "Most Photogenic." "She's a total ham," said Stacey Bean of her 4-year-old daughter, Rylee-Jade. "She has been singing and dancing since she was 1." Winners of Saturday's competition will move on to the state finals, which will be held April 12 to 15 in Harrisburg.
