| LETTER OF THE DAY - Paternity leave is long overdue
It is becoming increasingly common in Jamaica to see a single man pushing a stroller while shopping or on his way to the nursery. My friend, who practises paediatrics in Kingston, tells me that more fathers are accompanying mothers during their child's visit to the doctor. Additionally, many fathers are now the sole parent who takes the children for their routine doctor's visit. In a recent discussion with a colleague, who is a consultant obstetrics/gynaecology practitioner, I learnt that more men are also participating actively in the antenatal process. Having been a single dad myself, I have had first-hand experience with my eight-year-old daughter. These developments make me a proud Jamaican father. Jamaican dads are fighting back and seem to be gaining ground on the 'worthless dad' stigma.
Children will pay the price for cuts to BC child care services
Vancouver (7 Feb. 2007) - The B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) says it could cost taxpayers upwards of $5 million to close child care support services across the province by this fall. The finding is based on an initial survey of child care resource and referral centres across the province.
Child care supporters say the actions of Gordon Campbell's Liberal government add up to a gross mismanagement of public services and funds. Its decision to cut funding, along with the order to close down these services, comes as an abrupt about-face after originally deciding to invest millions to expand these same community services.
The losses will be felt most deeply by children, working families, communities and employers.
Parent fees are going up.
Publicist Pours Scorn On Princes Anna Nicole Baby Claims

MEXICO CITY -- A California couple has been arrested in Mexico and accused of illegally taking a 2-week-old baby, the Televisa network reported Thursday.Local authorities told the network that the couple presented false papers for the baby, then told officials that a poor mother gave them the child because she couldn't afford to care for him. The couple, both of whom carried California driver's licenses, were being held at a local jail, and face charges of trying to buy or rob a child. .

A judge on Friday refused to order an emergency DNA test on Anna Nicole Smith's body as part of a paternity suit involving her infant daughter, but he ordered that the body be preserved until a hearing Feb. 20, attorneys said. Three men are contesting the paternity of 5-month-old Dannielynn, and experts say the custody decision could determine the child's inheritance.
