| DVD Review: The Cry Baby Killer
Gotta admit that the thought of Buena Vista being the source of DVD reissues from the long and checkered career of director/producer Roger Corman has me more than a little flummoxed – even if the packagers attempt to justify it by labeling him the "Reigning King of Independent Film" (as opposed to "Mister Low-Budget"). Yeah, I know that BV is so much more than Disney these days, but seeing an ad for the most recent Pirates of the Caribbean flick alongside a collage of Cormania that includes such gems as Death Race 2000 (budgetary excess versus brilliance on a tight purse) remains decidedly strange. Still, if it results in the rescue of a picture like The Cry Baby Killer from the blurry netherworld of the Dollar Tree cheapie DVD shelves, I can't help but applaud BV's acquisition of a good part of the Corman library.Initially released in 1958, Cry Baby Killer is best known as Jack Nicholson's debut film.

The third-year forward was Mountain West co-Player of the Year at Brigham Young, and the eighth selection in the 2004 draft. A 26-year-old native of Brazil, Araujo and his wife Cheyenne have a 2-year-old daughter named Tais. You moved to the United States in 1999. What was that like? The first eight months for me were really tough because I didn't speak English. I couldn't communicate. I tried to overcome that by hanging out with Americans, trying to use the language and not be embarrassed if I made a mistake. If you're shy about it, you won't leave your room, you won't get better. I had friends in the dormitory [at Arizona Western] who would take the time and listen and try to understand. That was a big help. You go by a nickname in Brazil? Yes, everybody calls me "Baby" in Brazil.
State needs new leadership to straighten Road Home
Venting frustration over the Blanco administration's handling of the Road Home program, a leading Democratic state senator said Wednesday that if it is going to be straightened out, it's going to take new leadership. "I'm ready to wait until the next election to clean this stuff up," said Sen. Cleo Fields, D-Baton Rouge, expressing dissatisfaction about the Blanco administration's handling of efforts to rebuild homes after hurricanes Katrina and Rita. "The only way we're going to get relief in this state is if we've got new leadership." .
The Hidden Assassins by Robert Wilson (HarperCollins, 453 pages ...
An explosion in Seville flattens a mosque, part of an elementary school and some apartments. If this is the work of Islamic terrorists then why have they destroyed a mosque? Perhaps someone is trying to smear the growing Muslim population of southern Spain. Or maybe it was an accident. Chief Insp. Javier Falcon comes to the rescue in Robert Wilsons third of four planned novels that feature the brilliant but troubled Falcon. Robert Wilson is known for his very complex plots. And he allows the story, and the dialogue, to give clues so readers can form reasonable conclusions; Wilson does not tell the reader what to think. The murder of Falcons ex-wife is also part of the story. The author shows how the public and the media are preoccupied with the disgrace of one of Falcons superiors, Calderon, instead of the more important explosion.
