| Oakland mom convicted of second-degree murder
SAN FRANCISCO A 24-year-old mother who claimed she heard the voice of God telling her to sacrifice her young sons by tossing them to their deaths in San Francisco Bay was convicted Tuesday of second-degree murder. The defense claimed LaShuan Harris, 24, was legally insane when she systematically stripped the clothing from 6-year-old Treyshun Harris, 2-year-old Taronta Greely Jr. and 16-month-old Joshoa Greely on Oct. 19, 2005, and dropped them over the railing of Pier 7 into the water below. The same jury convicted Harris last week of three counts of assault on a child causing death but acquitted her of first-degree murder. Harris waived her right to continue the insanity phase of the case in front of a jury. Harris' attorney, Teresa Caffese, will present her insanity defense to San Francisco Superior Court Judge Kay Tsenin today in a bid to spare her client a possible life sentence in prison.

On the Israeli street, a reevaluation
Israeli President Moshe Katsav is facing rape charges - and rebuke from near and far. By Ilene R. Prusher Were I anywhere else in the world, I would probably be unnerved to learn that a man accused of rape and other incidences of sexual assault was living down the street. But this is Jerusalem, a place where everyone knows everyone, and veterans insist it's more of an extended village than a real city. It happens that I found a lovely apartment here two years ago. It's across the street and only a few doors down from the sprawling President's House, where Israeli President Moshe Katsav is awaiting indictment on charges of rape, abuse of power, obstruction of justice, and fraud. .
