Restaurateur makes sure 118 rare turtles reach sea safely
PENANG: It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for a family to find more than a hundred Olive Ridley baby turtles making their way out of the sand at a beach in Teluk Kumbar here, a rare occurrence in Penang. Hai Boey Seafood Restaurant owner Tan Tatt Ghee, 33, said he first saw a baby turtle near his restaurant at 1am yesterday when his dog was sniffing at something in the sand. I thought it was a crab. When I saw that it was a turtle, I called my family and we watched it make its way to the sea, he said. One hour later, they saw many more baby turtles crawling out from the sand. Fearing that the hatchlings might get entangled in fishing nets, the family picked up the tiny creatures and stored them in boxes filled with seawater. .
