Trekking through a rocky fantasyland of arches
MOAB, UTAH - In a short skirt and fashionable wedge-heeled sandals, the German woman teetered along a rocky trail in Arches National Park. "Mein Gott," she muttered, stymied as the trail ascended a steep little ledge. Her skirt was so tight, her shoes so slippery, she couldn't climb up the rocks. So her husband pushed; another hiker and I pulled her from above. She made it, inelegantly. On many trails in Arches, in the high desert of southeast Utah, visitors could get away with such a get-up. Some of the park's signature formations -- its stunning natural-rock arches -- are just a few minutes' walk from the road on flat, easy trails. A few short trails even are paved and suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Yet while Arches is relatively small (73,379 acres) and easily accessible compared with many national parks, there are tougher trails.
Voters Seek Clarity on Clinton Iraq Vote
MANCHESTER, N.H. - After nearly four years of war and more than 3,000 U.S. dead, New Hampshire voters are demanding more than nuance on Iraq from Democratic front-runner Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. From crowded town hall meetings to smaller gathering at private homes, Clinton was enthusiastically received by voters throughout the key early voting state on Saturday and Sunday. She deftly fielded questions on a range of subjects, from education to health care to the genocide in Darfur. But invariably, the questions returned to Iraq. What would she do to end the conflict if elected president? Would she support cutting funds to stop President Bush's planned increase in troop levels? And, perhaps most importantly, why won't she recant her 2002 vote authorizing the military invasion?"She has a very nuanced explanation, and it's a pretty good explanation.
Walter Chinn: 1914 - 2007: Grandchildren will miss former owner of ...
Walter Chinn once owned the China Cab Co. in Chinatown, served as a chef at the downtown Trader Vic's and worked for The Boeing Co. in its tool shop. The Beacon Hill resident, though, was a big kid at heart. He loved digging for geoducks and taking his grandchildren to Lake Washington to feed the ducks. Chinn, 92, died on Jan. 22 at Swedish Medical Center from pneumonia and other complications, following a September 2005 stroke, his family said Monday. "He was a very generous man," said Wes Chinn, his 39-year-old grandson, who lives in Seattle. "He made us feel like we were the most important person even though he had 12 grandkids and nine great-grandkids." After he dug up geoducks, he relaxed in his garage and talked with friends, said Phyllis Wong, his 65-year-old daughter.
