No baby is a defective baby

Thanks for Beverly Beckham's column on raising a child with Down syndrome ("Lucy's learning. But are doctors?" City Weekly, Feb. 4) .

I was offered amniocentesis for my first (and, it turned out, only) child. I was 38, hence the test. I knew there was miscarriage risk . The prior June, I had miscarried (blighted ovum) another baby, one loved, wanted. As minimal as the risk for miscarriage was with amniocentesis, it was not a chance I was willing to take.

What about birth defects? the clinicians asked me. I will have this baby come hell or high water, birth defects or no, I replied.

Essentially, they were asking me to undergo the amniocentesis in case I wanted to abort. No thanks -- been there, done that, in my selfish youth. Twice. Two abortions, two blighted ovums.

Increased risk of stillbirth in older pregnant women

Pregnancy at age 40 and beyond is an independent risk factor for intrauterine fetal demise or stillbirth, according to an abstract presented by Yale School of Medicine researchers at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Conference February 10 in San Francisco. The researchers also found that fetal testing at 38 weeks gestation has the greatest impact at reducing stillbirth rates in older women. Pregnant patients of advanced maternal age (AMA) are at increased risk for a multitude of pregnancy complications, including gestational diabetes mellitus, preeclampsia, placenta previa and intrauterine growth restriction. All of these conditions have been associated with a higher rate of stillbirth. To determine if AMA was an independent risk factor for stillbirth, and when fetal testing would be most beneficial for reducing stillbirth rates, the authors conducted a cross-sectional study using the United States CDC perinatal mortality database.

Zsa Zsa‘s husband: I might be baby‘s dad

LOS ANGELES - The husband of actress Zsa Zsa Gabor said Friday that he had a decade-long affair with Anna Nicole Smith and may be her infant daughter‘s father.

"If you go back from September, she wasn‘t with one of those guys, she was with me," von Anhalt told The Associated Press in an interview Friday.

Von Anhalt, 59, and Gabor, 90, have been married for more than 20 years.

Von Anhalt, who is Gabor‘s eighth husband, said he and Smith met in the 1990s when Smith was still married to elderly oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II. He said Smith approached him and Gabor at the Plaza Hotel in New York.

He said the two started an affair soon after, meeting over the years in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. For much of that time, he said, Smith urged him to make her a princess like his wife.

Baby Kaycee: mommy blogs surprise visit from Sheryl Crow

Kaycee Marie Macdonald, now 12 months old, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in May. So far, Kaycee has had 2 operations, one because her kidneys were failing and another to implant a tube in her chest for chemotherapy drugs. Every three weeks, she undergoes three days of chemotherapy. Friday, July 7, was just another day at the Jimmy Fund Clinic for Kaycee and her mother Kerri Macdonald, as Kaycee would be getting chemotherapy.

But that day would be different. As Kerri said in a CBS4 Boston television interview, "It's nice when the adrenaline rush is because of something happy and not for fear." The adrenaline rush of happy had to do with a surprise visit from Sheryl Crow. In town to perform at Fenway Park with Dave Matthews that night, Crow stopped in to visit with children being treated for cancer at the clinic.
