Police Briefs for 2/11/07

WOODBRIDGE: Two armed men robbed a Wachovia Bank in Colonia Thursday, escaping with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to police.

As bank personnel at the branch at 526 Inman Ave. prepared to close for the day at about 5:52 p.m., two men wearing jogging masks and dark clothing entered through the rear door, police said. One man with a silver handgun approached the service counter while the second man stood toward the center of the bank and pointed two black revolvers with wooden handles at all the people inside, police said.

The first man approached the teller and said, "Give me the money, don't be a hero and don't touch the alarms," before throwing a backpack over the counter and instructing her to "Put the money in the bag," police said.

After the teller emptied her drawer, the man said, "I know you have more, I know you have more," police said.

Robertsdale woman arrested for leaving baby in car

MOBILE, Ala. Authorities said today a Robertsdale woman was arrested when she visited an inmate at the Baldwin County jail while under the influence of drugs and left her baby alone in the car.

Baldwin County Sheriff's deputies arrested 21-year-old Penny Nicole Hume. They charged her with endangering the welfare of a child and possession of a controlled substance.

The sheriff's department said Hume left her 6-month-old baby in the car when she went into the county jail to visit an inmate. The child was removed unharmed by a deputy after 10-15 minutes. Hume was arrested when she returned to the car.

Enjoy your trip to the Temple of the Eight Immortals, but 'staff' off the grass

Web only: I have always prided myself in my ability to curl up in a little ball almost anywhere and get some sleep. Especially while traveling.

Still, I was a bit worried about how our vacation to some coastal towns during the first week of October would begin -- with an overnight bus ride.

At 7 p.m. we loaded our kids and luggage into two taxis, drove to a chartered bus and made the transfer. Once inside the bus, I discovered that there were only about 3-4 inches of leg room between the rows of seats.

Fortunately, the bus wasn't full, so our family of five got eight seats. Sophie and Ian could stretch out over two seats to sleep. And, I found that if I lay Isaac on the seat, I didn't have to worry about him rolling off into the narrow gap. The backs of the next row of seats would block him.

If baby gets bored, he may be a genius

Q. Your little bright-eyed bundle of wonders just may be a budding Einstein if baby...

a. had a high birth weight
b has an exceptionally long third toe
c. sits up alone at an early age
d. at just a few months looks long at a new picture
e. at just a few months grows quickly bored by a new picture.

A. Few stones have been left unturned in the search for indicators of infants' later intelligence, but a, b and c have not proved useful, says David Myers in "Psychology."

Yet studies by Joseph Fagan et al. reveal that 2- to 7-month-old babies who quickly lose interest in a picture, preferring to look at a new one, score higher on tests of brain speed and intelligence up to 11 years later.

Parents can relax here, though, because tests before age 3 have only minimal validity except for extremely impaired or precocious children.
