DUI charge added in pedestrian's death

FORT PIERCE — Prosecutors have added a new charge of DUI manslaughter to the list of crimes they allege a Port St. Lucie man committed one year ago in a hit-and-run crash that killed a mother who was out taking a walk with her baby in a stroller.

The state attorney's office had already charged Jerrold Baron, 56, with five counts - including vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident and tampering with evidence - in connection with the Jan. 26, 2006, crash that killed 31-year-old Lisa Vichlenski. On Friday, they charged him with a sixth crime: DUI manslaughter, according to court documents made public Wednesday.

Anna Nicole Smith-Prince

Zsa Zsa Gabor's husband says his wife doesn't like hearing him say he might be father of Anna Nicole Smith's baby.

But Prince Frederick von Anhalt says he knows "who the father is."

Von Anhalt, who is Gabor's eighth husband, claims he and Smith met in the 1990s when Smith was married to elderly oil tycoon Howard Marshall. He says Smith approached him and Gabor in New York. According to the prince, she "wanted to be like Zsa Zsa." He says "She wanted to be a princess."

Von Anhalt says he and Smith started an affair soon after.

The claim comes amid a paternity suit over Smith's five-month-old daughter, Dannielynn. The birth certificate lists the father as attorney Howard K. Stern, but former boyfriend Larry Birkhead says he's the father.

A guide to garden shows

Although the groundhog predicted an early spring and at least one red-winged blackbird (true harbinger of the season) has been spotted in Central New Jersey, you and I know that there's a lot of frozen ground between here and spring.

What's a gardener to do? Why, head to the flower and garden shows, of course. Coming right up are extravaganzas in New Jersey, Philadelphia and Rhode Island, each a burst of green for the chlorophyll-deprived. The former is near at hand, while the latter two suggest an amusing road trip or weekend getaway.

Prepare yourselves for glory (The scents! The sights!), but arm yourself with a little healthy skepticism and a small dose of preparation.

It is a giddy thing to wander the aisles, exclaiming over display gardens, replete with burbling fountains, exotic species, extensive brickwork and flower-laden trellises.

Local mom leaves baby alone in car in front of Sheriff's Department

A young mother will be spending this weekend behind bars, charged with leaving her six-month-old baby alone in a car. It's the second such incident this week, but this time, the crime happened right in front of the Sheriff's department and this time, authorities say drugs may have played a part. While no one answered at the Elsanor residence where Penny Hume told authorities she lives, the 21-year-old mother is spending this night at the Baldwin County Correction Center. This, after deputies say Hume left her 6-month-old baby boy unattended in the back of a 1997 Oldsmobile parked in front of the Baldwin County Sheriff's Department Friday afternoon. Ironically, Hume was there to bail out her boyfriend, who was being held on a DUI charge. While she was inside, an alert deputy spotted the baby strapped in his car seat outside.
