Fairbanksans in DC

Counts differ, but according to the Washington Post it was about 300,000 people that fellow Fairbanksan Suzanne Rich and I joined last weekend to march on Washington D.C. and demand that our leaders end the war in Iraq.

Unlike the Vietnam-era marches, which brought violent confrontations, this was a "family march" that brought grandparents, parents, young people and children, including babies in strollers.

With no riot gear in sight, we danced, sang, used street theater, and lobbied (on Monday), to send the message to our representatives that we are fed up with the disastrous foreign policy destroying our country. One in every thousand Americans, who represented thousands more, brought four main points to our nation's capital.

Do not support the surge and bring the troops home now.

Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!

Babies cannot thrive on love alone. And celebrity babies in particular are high maintenance from the start, requiring only the best transportation (Silver Cross carriages), protection from the elements (Bloom Love cardigans) and nutrition (organic Bohemian Baby). Doesn't your kid deserve the star treatment, too? Here's where to start.

Must-have baby products that give celebrity tots the star treatment their parents demand

Fujikawa just three shots off Pearl lead

With the face of Hawai'i golf growing more baby-faced and brilliant by the minute, the wind tore through the second round of the Hawai'i Pearl Open yesterday leaving a leaderboard full of Japanese pros but peppered by the young and restless from all over paradise.

Tadd Fujikawa, a 16-year-old simply known as "The Boy" around Pearl Country Club, continued his "Boy Wonder" imitation. It began last year when he became the youngest to qualify for the U.S. Open in its 106-year history, and cultivated a monstrous following when he was the youngest to make a PGA Tour cut in 50 years at last month's Sony Open in Hawai'i.

After a disastrous four-putt on his seventh hole yesterday, he played the final dozen in 6-under to finish with a 68. He is three shots off the lead going into this morning's final round.

Israeli researcher: Low sodium level as baby causes higher desire ...

Salt, according to researcher Dr. Micah Leshem, is the essence of life. Without salt in our bodies, we would suffer a range of symptoms from nausea, vomiting, headaches and weariness, to convulsions, coma, and eventually death. That's why we all naturally desire and eat salt.

But why do some people have such a strong desire for salty foods, while others prefer to give them a miss? That's a question that Leshem, a professor of psychology at the University of Haifa, believes he has now found the answer to.

In a study of 41 children and teenagers born prematurely at two neonatal units at the Emek Medical Center in Afula and the Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya, Leshem and his colleagues found that those with low sodium levels in their blood at birth had a particular fondness for salty food.
